Coach
I want players to leave with better skills, more confidence and a stronger sense of responsibility to the people beside them.
I’m Ian Neilson—known to most as Coach Ian. I build relationships, set clear expectations and help people follow through. That’s the thread through my coaching, consulting and storytelling.

The person behind the work
I’m a husband, a dad and someone who cares deeply about the people around me. Home is in Durham Region. Whether I’m at the rink, working with a business owner or behind a camera, relationships come first.
Being a dad shapes the way I coach. Being a coach shapes the way I lead. Photography reminds me to pay attention—to the person in front of me and the moments that are easy to miss.
I believe you can care about someone and still ask more of them. You can listen, offer support and have the difficult conversation. People deserve to know where they stand, what is expected and that someone is in their corner.
That’s how I try to show up: with honesty, clear expectations and a willingness to do the work alongside you.
I want players to leave with better skills, more confidence and a stronger sense of responsibility to the people beside them.
I help people make sense of a challenge, agree on what matters and put a practical plan into action. Then we follow through.
Through photographs and writing, I preserve the moments that show who people are and why their stories matter.

What you can expect from me
Trust grows through what we do every day. These are the commitments I bring to the work.
Before we talk about solutions, I want to understand the people, the pressure and what is actually happening.
We’ll name the challenge, talk through expectations and agree on what needs to happen next—even when the conversation is uncomfortable.
The goal is something you can use: a clearer plan, a better way of working or the support to take the next step.
From hockey parents / 2025–26 season
“He is the kind of coach who places relationship at the core and as such is the coach that kids want to work hard for and make proud.”
